Meet the Jurors:

Azadeh Monzavi
Azadeh Monzavi is a researcher/artist, sessional lecturer, and Ph.D. Candidate (ABD) in the Communication and Culture program at Toronto Metropolitan University. Her research and praxis aim to elucidate some of the interconnected ways in which memory, identity, textiles, and the body serve as rich sources of lived experiences and ways of knowing. She uses second-hand textiles, ‘found’ materials, and crafting techniques such as crocheting, knitting, and sewing to create new media works. With a background in art history, her research examines intersectionality, textiles, fashion, visuality, and materiality within the broader feminist framework of cultural studies and communication. Her piece Namesake (2022) is in the Canada Council Art Bank collection, she completed a residency with the Textile Museum of Canada, and was recently awarded the Projection Mapping Mentorship, a collaborative project between the City of Mississauga and AVA Animation & Visual Arts Inc., as part of the Mississauga 50th Anniversary celebrations. Her creative practice, acknowledged in eight exhibitions (six juried), with residencies, collections, and international exposure, spans a number of traditional and emergent methods and media: textiles, massive-scale architectural media, and experimental documentary film. (Examples of her practice can be seen on her website https://www.azadehmonzavi.net/.)
