Stephen Della Casa Soundings: Lost Villages

Opening reception: Thursday, September 11, 2025 at 6:00 pm

The Art Gallery of Northumberland is pleased to present Soundings: Lost Villages, a new exhibition by artist Stephen Della Casa, on view from September 6 to November 2, 2025.

At the heart of Soundings is River Portal, a 40-foot-long immersive sound tunnel composed of eight distinct audio zones. As visitors walk its length, they encounter a shifting sonic landscape that reflects on the histories, absences, and emotional aftershocks of displacement. Designed for deep listening, the work transforms the act of walking into an acoustic meditation on memory, progress, and loss.

Also featured is Radiant Shoreline, a large-scale cartographic work of the pre-inundated St. Lawrence River. Marking the original sites of the Lost Villages, it is overlaid with luminous rings—echoes of energy from submerged places that continue to power the present. Two additional photographic works complete the exhibition, all rooted in Della Casa’s decades-long connection to the land and the stories of Eastern Ontario.

“Soundings invites us to slow down and listen—to what remains, to what was lost, and to the silence that follows progress. It’s about memory, place, and the unseen costs of transformation.”
