Arts Education
Building the Thinkers, Storytellers and Problem-Solvers
Arts education does more than teach technique. Through music, visual art, drama, and dance, learners develop creativity, confidence, and the ability to see the world from different perspectives.
When we invest in arts education, we’re not just nurturing talent—we’re shaping resilient, innovative minds ready to contribute in meaningful ways.
Programs that Engage
Our vision is to inspire and support learning through art in a positive and inclusive environment. We provide a highly engaging programme, supporting cognitive, fine motor and emotional/affective development in children while encouraging joyful engagement with art.
A Place to Look, Learn, and Imagine.
At the Art Gallery of Northumberland, learning begins with looking—and grows through curiosity, creativity, and connection. Our Education Department offers vibrant, inclusive programs that invite visitors of all ages to engage deeply with art and ideas. Through guided tours, hands-on workshops, and community-based experiences, we create spaces where questions are encouraged, perspectives are shared, and creativity is unlocked.
We believe that everyone can connect with art in their own way, and our programs are designed to make those connections meaningful and memorable. Whether you're visiting with a class, your family, or on your own, we invite you to explore, imagine, and discover something new each time you walk through our doors.

Let's Learn and Make Art, Together!
The Art Gallery of Northumberland has three Homeschool Workshops planned for Spring 2026! Enhance your homeschool art programming with in-gallery programming to inspire your future artists!
Parent volunteers are strongly encouraged while in the gallery space.
Workshop #1: The Still Life Studio
Date: April 30 | Time: 10-11:30 a.m. | Cost: $10/participant | Ages: 8-14
Step into the gallery and create like a real artist. Set inside the stunning Permanent Collection Gallery, where the exhibition “Narrative and Nourishment” showcases spectacular still life masterpieces, this immersive studio session invites students to slow down, observe, and create.
Through a series of engaging warm-up sketches, students will quickly build confidence while learning the essential foundations of drawing — form, composition, and value. With the optional guidance of the gallery instructor, they’ll then move into a deeper exploration of a carefully arranged still life, learning how artists transform everyday objects into compelling works of art.
By the end of the session, students will walk away with new skills, a finished drawing, and a fresh appreciation for the art they see in the gallery.
Perfect for experienced young artists and curious beginners alike, this program offers:
-
A unique opportunity to draw inside a museum gallery
-
Instruction in core drawing techniques used by professional artists
-
Hands-on learning inspired by masterworks from the current exhibition
-
A welcoming environment that encourages creativity and focus
Workshop #2: Art Your Heart Out!
Date: May 14, 2026 | Time: 10-11:30am | Cost: $10/participant | Ages: 8-14
Inspired by the AGN Youth Council exhibition The Art of Becoming, this creative workshop invites young artists to explore what brings energy, comfort, and inspiration into their lives.
Through guided discussion and hands-on artmaking, participants will reflect on the small but powerful moments—those personal “sparks”—that help them recharge, feel grounded, and express who they are. Students will experiment with materials and ideas as they transform these reflections into vibrant, meaningful artworks.
The result? A piece of art that not only celebrates what sparks joy in their lives, but also captures a personal story they can be proud to share.
By the end of the session, each participant will create a personal artwork designed to capture their sparks and bring joy both in the making and when displayed at home.
Workshop #3: Abstract Storytelling
Date: May 28 | Time: 10-11:30 a.m. Cost: $10/participant | Ages: 8-14
Inspired by Nerine Cavadias’s exhibition, this imaginative workshop invites young artists to explore how powerful stories can be told without words or realistic images.
Participants will reflect on meaningful moments, memories, or experiences from their own lives and discover how artists use colour, line, shape, and movement to express ideas and emotions. Through guided activities and creative experimentation, students will transform their personal stories into bold abstract artworks.
The result? A unique and expressive piece that moves beyond literal representation and communicates something deeply personal through the language of abstract art.
Along the way, young artists will build confidence in creative risk-taking while discovering new ways to tell stories through art.

Making Art Accessible for Everyone
The Mini Art Gallery project encourages the creation and delivery of art throughout our community, making art accessible to all while encouraging community engagement.
Here’s how it works. Any time you come across a mini art gallery you have an opportunity to take a piece, leave a piece, or both. You just may find your new favourite local artist or, seeing what your neighbours are making might encourage you to break out of your bubble and make something new and unique! Get creative with your masterpiece. Within the walls of this gallery experimentation and imperfection are welcomed.
We will be sharing all of the wonderfully mini artworks that will adorn the gallery walls and feel free to leave your name, website, social media handles, or you may choose to leave them a mystery.
